习语几乎可以是任何形式:动词短语(spill the beans)、名词短语(a blessing in disguise)、介词短语(under the weather),或者一整个句子(actions speak louder than words)。
- Spill the beans泄露秘密。“She spilled the beans about the surprise party.”
- A blessing in disguise起初看似坏事,结果却是好事。“Missing that train was a blessing in disguise.”
- Under the weather感觉有点不舒服。“I stayed home because I felt under the weather.”
“He promised to help, but actions speak louder than words.”
短语动词是一个动词后面跟着一两个小词,这些小词叫作小品词,例如 up、off、out 或 in:give up、look after、run out of。 I gave up、she has given up。
有些短语动词很好理解,例如 sit down 或 come back,但很多并非如此:give up 的意思是不再尝试,put up with 的意思是忍受令人不快的事。你可以在我们的短语动词网站 phrasalverbs.app 上学习它们。
- 灵活性:短语动词像普通动词一样变化(give up, gave up, given up),有些还可以拆开(give it up)。
习语中常常包含短语动词:get out of hand 就是在 get out of 的基础上构成的。
- Get out of hand变得太难控制,超出可掌控的范围。“Without clear rules, the discussion can get out of hand.”
“A short game helped break the ice at the workshop.”
